The Altai maral (Cervus elaphus sibiricus) is the largest subspecies of red deer, native to the mountain ecosystems of the Altai region. An adult stag weighs 250–400 kg and grows antlers up to 120 cm long, weighing 8–12 kg for elite-class animals. These antlers contain the highest concentration of bioactive substances among all deer species.

The Altai Ecosystem Advantage
The Altai Mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage Site — one of the most ecologically pristine regions on Earth. No heavy industry, no agricultural chemicals, no urban pollution. Maral deer graze on alpine meadows containing over 150 species of medicinal plants, many of which are found nowhere else:
- Rhodiola rosea — natural adaptogen (enhances antler’s adaptogenic properties)
- Maral root (Rhaponticum) — ecdysteroid source, supports antler growth
- Red brush (Rhodiola quadrifida) — anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory
- Mountain thyme, gentian, bergenia — minerals, polyphenols
Stag Classification
| Class | Age | Antler Weight | Used For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Young (Pervorog) | 2–3 years | 2–4 kg | Standard products |
| Middle | 4–7 years | 4–7 kg | Premium products |
| Elite (Rogach) | 8–12 years | 8–12 kg | Milespant Giant |
Stress makes maral deer stronger. The harsh Altai climate (-40°C in winter, short growing season) forces maral deer to produce antlers with a more concentrated composition of bioactive substances. This is an evolutionary adaptation: the more extreme the environment, the richer the antler composition.
